One Piece: Luffy’s New Devil Fruit Ability Changes Everything

The revelation of the true nature of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, Joy Boy’s explanation, and Luffy’s connection to the Sun God Nike.

One Piece has been around for decades, and each episode reveals and connects intricate details that fans might not have missed or expected. The latest chapter of the manga caused a lot of controversy due to the true nature of Luffy’s new Devil Fruit. In Chapter 1043, Luffy suffered a crushing defeat from Kaido, one of the Four Emperors. After defeating Luffy, Kaido revels in his victory, which, however, proved to be short-lived after Luffy revealed his true form.

After Luffy and Kaido’s fight in chapter 1043, Momonosuke states that he can’t hear Luffy’s voice, which is confirmed by Captain Kid and Trafalgar Law. This discovery sends the samurai and the Straw Hats into a panic; Momonosuke decides to surrender to Kaido, but Yamato convinces him not to surrender so that the combined efforts of the samurai and the Straw Hats won’t go to waste. However, Momonosuke suddenly hears the voice of Zunesha, who announces the rebirth of Joy Boy after 800 years. At the same time, Luffy’s body structure changes and what looks like steam comes out of his mouth.

Who is Joy Boy?

There were a lot of mysteries around the character of Joy Boy. He was the central figure who contributed to the history of Fishman Island during the Void Age. The first mention of Joy Boy was in Chapter 628 of One Piece, during the discovery of the Sea Forest Poneglyph and its deciphering by Nico Robin. Joy Boy brought Noah to Fishman Island 900 years before the start of the One Piece timeline. He makes a promise to the people of Fishman Island that he can’t keep. Later, Joy Boy’s message to Poseidon was found on one of the Poneglyphs, apologizing for the broken promise.

Joy Boy was also mentioned in the “Golden Roger – Kozuki Oden” flashback in the Wano arc as the person who hid One Piece on the Laugh Tale Island. These revelations imply that Joy Boy was a key figure in One Piece despite the oppressive World Government’s constant suppression of any information about him. It can also be deduced from these chapters that Joy Boy is not a person, but a key title given to a person who is trying to “liberate” the world from oppression.

Chapter 1044 confirms these assumptions; Zunesha states that Joy Boy has returned and reports that he hears “Drums of Liberation” which is synchronized with the awakening of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu No Mi. Upon awakening, Luffy is shocked that he is still alive and ponders the possibility. Luffy realizes that he should have lost to Kaido, but instead he feels a surge of new energy and calls his new form “Fifth Gear”, the peak of his power.

Are there hidden truths in the fruits of Gomu-Gomu-no Mi?

Meanwhile, the scenery changes and the five elders who lead the World Government in the Holy Land are revealed to be discussing a stolen Devil Fruit. One of the elders expresses his displeasure at the sacrifice of one of their elite agents who was sent to Wano. This CPO agent was mortally wounded by Drake, who hacked him from behind with his sword in chapter 1042. The club member also mentions that their efforts were counterproductive as they ended up angering Kaido. Another participant justifies their actions by saying that they need to get rid of dangerous variables. Another member also talks about how the world government has been unable to get the Gomu Gomu No Mi, Luffy’s Devil Fruit, for about 800 years. He goes on to state that the Devil Fruit appears to have a mind of its own, revealing that the Gomu Gomu No Mi was actually a mythical Zoan, shocking One Piece fans around the world. As a rule, Zoan fruits have a mind of their own, but Gomu Gomu No Mi’s evasiveness was on a completely different scale.

Further, during a discussion at the World Government Council, it was revealed that the Devil Fruit called “Gomu Gomu no Mi” is actually called the Hito Hito no Mi (Human Human Fruit), Model: Nika. This devil fruit bears the name of God – Nike. In One Piece, although there was little information about Nick, he is revered as the God of the Sun, savior, and more. The Hito Hito no Mi allows its user to have a rubber body limited only by their imagination. This intimidating power was taken advantage of by Luffy – the main reason he was able to change the direction of his strikes during the first round of his duel with Kaido in Onigashima. As the story’s perspective switches from the Elders’ discussion of the power of the Hito Hito no Mi to Onigashima, Luffy unlocks his Fifth Gear and lightning bolts come out of him, knocking out Kaido’s subordinates. Suddenly, a huge hand appears, apparently belonging to Luffy, grabs Kaido and effortlessly swings him, after which he falls to the ground. Luffy has fiery hair and laughs for no apparent reason. Kaido apologizes for the CPO interfering with their previous battle before shooting Luffy with an explosive breath. Luffy dodges him in time and lifts up some of the ground, redirecting Kaido’s offensive ability back at him. Luffy’s facial features are now visible, showing his curly eyebrows and dark eyes.

These new revelations in One Piece raise many questions, leading Shanks back to obtaining the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit. Perhaps Shanks orchestrated this whole saga, or he already knew about the true nature of the fruit. In any case, sooner or later, Oda will have a lot of interesting things in store for One Piece fans.
